The Tesla Powerwall Backup Switch (1624171-00-E) is a compact grid-isolation and energy-metering component for compatible Tesla Powerwall backup-power systems. When a utility outage is detected, the switch disconnects the home from the grid so the Powerwall system can supply backup power to supported household loads.
Its meter-socket design fits between a compatible electrical meter socket and the utility meter. In approved installations, this arrangement can reduce additional wall-mounted equipment and avoid extensive rewiring associated with some conventional backup configurations.
An integrated consumption meter supports home energy monitoring through the connected Powerwall system and Tesla app. The Backup Switch combines grid-connection control and energy measurement in one compact component.

Specifications reflect Tesla’s published Backup Switch product-family ratings. Confirm the exact hardware revision, installation requirements, and included accessories before ordering.
During an outage, the internal contactor separates the home’s backed-up electrical system from the utility grid, helping prevent power from feeding back onto utility lines. The Powerwall batteries supply the stored energy; the Backup Switch manages the grid connection. This component is not a battery, an inverter, or a complete standalone backup-power system.
Installation behind the utility meter requires utility approval and a compatible meter socket. Where the utility does not permit that arrangement, or the existing socket is unsuitable, Tesla provides an alternative installation method using a suitable standalone meter panel downstream of the utility meter. Additional equipment and installation work are required for that configuration.
Confirm Tesla P/N 1624171-00-E with the installer before purchasing. The Backup Switch is not a universal replacement for a Backup Gateway, and compatible Powerwall 2 installations still require Backup Gateway 2. Installation and commissioning must follow the applicable Tesla instructions and utility requirements.
