The IEC 60309 standard defines a singly rated, non-interchangeable configuration for every voltage and type of service worldwide: pin and sleeve device housings
are color-coded by voltage rating, and the voltage is determined by the location of the female ground contact relative to the housing keyway.

By placing the ground contact in a specific “clock” position, each IEC 60309 device is keyed to a particular voltage system. This prevents accidental mismatches and gives you a globally recognized, mechanically interlocked solution for mission-critical power.
